The Craft Central & How To Make Rawnola

Our generation have been molding the creative industry since the day we were born. A neon sign that the art industry is swiftly blooming in our community is the popping up of arts & crafts store. To witness and be a contributor of that movement is absolutely incredible.

Over the past few years, a diverse range of creative shops have been taking root left and right in our local neighborhood. Nowadays, what used to be a soul search for particular craft supplies, is easily accessible as typing in a few keywords and coming up with results in seconds. As an artist, I’ve experienced the difficulty of hunting down art tools that meet my preferences only to find that they aren’t available from where I am. Back from the time when art stores were limited, I would have to scour the corners the world wide web to search for what I needed, going through the process of having it purchased from halfway across the Universe or oceans away from home.

Millennials and fellow creatives came up with the brilliant idea of addressing this very dilemma, and we, artists, have these brands to thank for making our lives a thousand times easier. Established stores like The Craft Central, Hey Kessy, Art Whale, Common Room and Wildwood Store to name a few, are now carrying a range of our artistic needs.

LATELY: PREPPING ARTWORKS FOR THE CRAFT CENTRAL

The Craft Central is a hub for creatives looking for craft supplies and finely printed works by local artists, carrying specialty brands of watercolors, markers, paper, calligraphy tools and whatnot.

About a month ago, I received an e-invitation to be a part of their store, soon-to-launch in Greenbelt 5, Makati. I’ve had similar invites before but have politely declined due to certain circumstances. Having only had a one time experience of consigning my artworks with Restock earlier in the year made me I a bit hesitant to sign up, thinking that it might be difficult to handle since I would be heading to the Bay Area soon to continue my studies.

But the Universe had certain plans for me and despite all the neglected flashing signs that I should go for it (even from all the previous invitations I received), the Universe never gave up and continued pointing me towards this opportunity. So I started to listen and open my heart to the idea.

A few days later Noah, a friend whom I met from The Raw Table hosted by Chiara Garcia, shared with us that The Craft Central was having an open call for freelance entrepreneurs looking to sell their craft and products. That got me to thinking that it would actually be a perfect opportunity to hand over some of my last few artworks from my online store and have newly printed ones be sold in an actual, physical shop instead of rotting inside my closet. I then looked for their e-mail and proceeded to contact them so I could send over my products, and after the screening they invited me to be a part of the club.

For the past week I began noting my inventory, ordering and handling the printing process, signing my prints and wrapping up my artworks. I was transported back to the time when I used to attend art fairs, and the hype and excitement of prepping my prints filled the room as I was going around fixing my works and dancing to some tunes.

In between catching up and holding despedidas with my friends, balancing work and processing all the overwhelming feelings that life is currently throwing at me, I managed to stay on top and balance everything even if it meant catching three hours of zzz’s a day and rushing from one event to another.

threw gatherings with my friends (and met up with others whom I haven’t seen for years), managed to be a part of a fundraiser group exhibit along with talented local artists, joined an outreach program for kids at the hospital where we had an afternoon creating art and spreading light and love, and held my first ever workshop where I connected and learned more about my craft. As one of the craziest months I’ve had to date, it’s been a whirlwind of laughter, tears, experiences, and great opportunities and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I know that it’s only the beginning of my new journey.

POWERING UP WITH RAWNOLA AND BAKED BANANAS

My cravings have recently been gravitating to rolled oats, cooked and prepped in all form, shapes and sizes. I’ve been stirring up a hot bowl of oatmeal, baking granolas and prepping bircher muesli for breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner. You get the drift.

Lately, I discovered a new way to eat this versatile grain whilst browsing through my feed. Rawnola is the fusion of raw + granola where you don’t have to bake anything, hence coined as raw. All you have to do is blend up a cup of oats with some other ingredients and you’ve got yourself an energizing snack! No need for heating machines, just a plain ‘ol blender (except of course if you want to pair it with baked bananas, which I definitely recommend!)

While I was in the middle of preparing my artworks for the store, I had the sudden urge to experiment at the kitchen where my curiosity got the better of me. I tested out the recipe and it turned out better than I expected, so I thought I’d share it with you lovely beings for when you need a pick me up or a light afternoon snack. Below is the easy peasy recipe for this ultimate munchy:


Rawnola & Baked Bananas

Rawnola

2 cup oats

1 cup soaked dates (about 10-15 pieces)

2 tsp. cinammon

3 bananas (optional)

1-2 tbsp. chia seed (optional)

1 cup almonds

1 tbsp. cocoa powder

Toppings

1 tbsp. desiccated coconut

1 baked bananas

1 tbsp. peanut butter

What To Do

Mix rawnola ingredients togehter and pulse with a blender. Be careful not to over blend the mixture. Next, slice up some bananas or saging na saba and line the oven with a baking sheet or foil. Bake at 200°C for 15-20 minutes or until it becomes golden brown at the top or starts becoming crisp.

When everything’s ready, scoop up some of that granola and place in a little bowl. Top it with a bit of desiccated coconut, baked bananas and peanut butter, mix with a spoon and you’re good to go!


* Good for 1 – 2 small servings. You may spice up your toppings however way you like it! Experiment to see what flavors suits best for you.
